  3. MacChess-ExaChess Interface Patch    (Requires Power Macintosh)

  5. THIS FILE IS NOT STANDALONE. It requires:
  6.  
  7.   A) MacChess 4.0 - a free master-strength Power Macintosh chess program
  8.                     available from http://members.aol.com/Macchess/
  9.              
  10.   B) ExaChess 1.2 - a great Mac chess database program, available in both
  11.                     free ("Lite") and commercial ("Pro") format. 
  12.                     The patched MacChess (MacChess 4.0.exa) works with either. 
  13.                     ExaChess Lite is at http://www.exachess.com/                
  14.                         
  15. This patch modifies MacChess 4.0 so it can communicate with ExaChess. 
  16. That's all. You only need this patch if you plan to use MacChess with
  17. ExaChess on a Power Macintosh.
  18.  
  19. You might want to use MacChess 4.0.exa to:
  20.  
  21. 1) Analyze games in an ExaChess database with MacChess.
  22.  
  23. 2) Conduct an automatic match between MacChess and another ExaChess
  24.    compatible chess program (Crafty, GNUChess, ZZZZZZ)
  25.    
  26. 3) Play MacChess yourself using the ExaChess interface. In particular,
  27.    the ExaChess board is resizable (unlike MacChess's) and can be
  28.    made very large.
  29.  
  30. The modified version of MacChess 4.0 (MacChess 4.0 exa) is not to be 
  31. distributed except with ExaChess, or to people who already have ExaChess.
  32.  
  33. Permission is granted to distribute this patch on InfoMac CD-ROMs.

  37. How to use the patch:
  38.  
  39. Note: the patch should not alter the original copy of MacChess 4.0,
  40. only create a modified copy - MacChess 4.0.exa.
  41.  
  42. However, it never hurts to make sure you have a backup.   
  43.  
  44. 0) Download MacChess 4.0 and ExaChess from the web sites above.
  45.  
  46. 1) Launch "MacChess - ExaChess Patch".
  47.     Click on the "Patch" button, and use the resulting dialog box
  48.     to open the application file: MacChess 4.0
  49.     (it should be in a folder labelled MacChess 4.0 EN)
  50.  
  51.     The patch will create a new file (MacChess 4.0 exa) by default.
  52.      It will not affect the file "MacChess 4.0"
  53.     (but it may place the new file directly over it).
  54.  
  55. 2) Leave the file MacChess 4.0 exa in the same folder as MacChess 4.0 
  56.    (it needs to be in the same folder as the "MacChess Opening Book").
  57.  
  58. 3) Make an alias of MacChess 4.0 Exa
  59.     (In System 7.5, you select it, and use "Make Alias" from the "File" Menu.
  60.  
  61. 4) Place the Alias file in the "ExaChess Tools" subfolder of ExaChess Lite 1.2
  62.  
  63. You can now launch ExaChess, and access the online help by pulling down the
  64. Apple Guide Menu (question mark at the top left of the menu bar).
  65.  
  66. Section 6 of the ExaChess User's Guide describes the use of engines such as
  67. MacChess 4.0.exa.
